How to Encourage Your Employees to Stay Safe & Healthy Outside of Work | GoSource

Keep Your Team Safe & Healthy with These Tips

There are a plethora of concerns for employers when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only do you need to ensure your employees’ safety while they are working, but many employers feel they should encourage employees to stay safe outside the workplace as well. Below are a few things managers can do to encourage their employees to stay savvy and safe.

Within the Workplace

Obviously, there isn’t much you can do about what your employees do outside of work. However, within the workplace, there are a number of precautions you can take to ensure the safety of your team.

Create workspaces that allow your staff to stay six-feet apart. There should also be signage encouraging them to wash their hands on a regular basis. Talk to your team about good hygiene and its benefits to keeping COVID-19 at bay. Doing this can help them continue these habits at home and outside of work.

Provide Information About COVID

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided a lot of information for employers about returning to the workplace. Provide this information to your staff, and be sure they fully understand it. Make any new information readily available to them as well. The more information you can give them the better.

Encourage Your Team to Clean Up

Discuss cleaning up procedures with your team. Encourage them to wipe down their keyboards and other work stations on a daily basis. This will decrease the likelihood of germs being spread day-to-day in the workplace. It will also help your team build good habits they can use outside of work.

Put Policies in Place

Create your COVID-19 policies, and be sure each of your employees understands them. There should also be a clear policy about what happens if an employee is exposed to COVID. Be clear about your expectations with your employees and address any questions they may have regarding any new policies.

Set a Good Example

It is important as an employer to set a good example when it comes to staying safe. For instance, in the workplace, employers and managers must set a good example when it comes to manufacturing safety. They use the buddy system when lifting and follow all the safety measures to set an example for their employees. The same should be said of COVID safety protocol. If you expect your employees to be clean, practice social distancing, and relatively unsocial outside of work, you should do the same.

Perform Check-Ins

Not every team member is working in an employer-controlled environment right now, though, so how can you keep your employees safe and healthy outside of work?

Check-in with your employees to see how they are feeling, both mentally and physically. Place emphasis on their health will show them that you value them as an employee. This will help improve morale and also give you an idea of how your team is feeling about their work in general. When you put an emphasis on their health, so will they. A healthy staff is a productive staff.
